The AWS Verification System provides for two types of assessment against the AWS Standard processes: self-verification and certification through a third-party conformity assessment body (CAB). The following diagram presents a comparison of the processes and associated terms.

Verification versus Certification

The AWS Standard System is rooted in four normative documents:

Note that in response to questions received by CABs in relation to the interim requirements listed above we are maintaining a Q&A document to address issues as they arise and ensure consitency of approach.

The following table illustrates the purpose and audience for these documents

AWS system documentation

Self-verification against the AWS Standard is designed to encourage sites operating in complex environments to proceed with implementation of the Standard, recognizing that in some cases this might be a lengthy journey. Successful completion of a self-verification assessment will allow implementers to make limited claims with respect to AWS and compliance.

To undertake self-verification it is first necessary to register this intent with AWS by downloading, completing and submitting the site registration form.

The assessment itself will be comparable to an internal audit. As part of self-verification, implementers are required to disclose information about the performance of the site in relation to select indicators from the AWS Standard.

Full requirements for self-verification can be accessed here.

Certification against the AWS Standard is a mark of having met the global benchmark for good water stewardship. AWS certification has three levels: Core, Gold and Platinum. Higher levels of certification are designed to drive continual improvement and stronger collaboration on shared water challenges.

Steps to certification

AWS certificates are issued by independent conformity assessment bodies (CABs) who have achieved AWS interim accreditation. Only CABs with AWS interim accreditation are authorized to issue AWS certificates.  Your route to certification has six key steps:

  1. Download the AWS Standard and familiarize yourself with the intent, the criteria and the indicators.
  2. Download, complete and submit the site registration form
  3. Implement the AWS Standard
  4. Get in touch with a CAB with AWS interim accreditation who can discuss process, requirements and give you an estimate of time and cost of certification.
  5. Get your site(s) audited.
  6. Get your site’s AWS certification: if you conform with the AWS criteria your site’s certificate will be valid for three years, subject to successful surveillance audits.

Full requirements for certification can be accessed here.

AWS certificates are issued only by independent conformity assessment bodies (CABs) who have achieved AWS interim accreditation. AWS also accredits consultants and trainers to support awareness raising on water stewardship and the implementation of the AWS Standard. These specialist service providers have met rigorous criteria and undertaken specialist AWS training courses before gaining accreditation to deliver AWS-related services.

The AWS interim accreditation requirements can be accessed here.
